About The Nihon Kobudo Kyokai

Okinawan Goju-Ryu Karate-Do Bujutsu Recognised by the Nihon Budokan

In 1997, Morio Higaonna Shihan and Okinawa Goju-Ryu Karate Bujutsu were recognised and inducted into the Nihon Kobudo Kyokai (formerly Nihon Kobudo Shinkokai), the head department of the Nihon Budokan, headquartered in Tokyo Japan.

To clarify what this organisation is, the word "Kobudo" in this context does not represent the art of Okinawan weaponry, but the kanji of this name actually represents "old martial arts". This organisation's purpose is to recognise and preserve Japanese original and traditional martial arts. The Nihon Kobudo Kyokai boasts the fact that many of their members have been declared "National Cultural Treasures" by the Japanese government.

It is very difficult to be recognised by this organisation. Their mission is to ensure that only recognised styles with a clear lineage traceable to the founder of their Ryu are admitted. Many styles who have made application have been refused admission. Currently, member styles include Ju-jutsu, Ken-jutsu, Aiki-jutsu, Taiho-jutsu, Ryu-kyu Kobu-jutsu, and now Okinawan Goju-Ryu Karate-Do Bu-jutsu represented by Morio Higaonna Shihan.

Once a year the Nihon Budokan stages a televised documentry / demonstration showcasing each member style. In early 1998 Morio Higaonna Shihan was part of this event representing the style of Okinawan Goju-Ryu Karate-Do, and continues to be a part of this annual demonstration every year.
