Grading Registration Process - Please read carefully and take special note of the change of address.

Students wishing to grade this December should arrange that the relevant registration forms (see below) are completed and signed by their Sensei in good time. Applications should be posted to the EGKA Secretary, 44 Willow Way, Christchurch, Dorset, BH23 1LA to arrive no later than 1st December 2011.

Please do not send grading applications by Registered Post. We are not there to sign for the special delivery post in the morning.

In future, a registration form will not be accepted as complete unless:

  • –   The latest versions of the registration forms for Kyu and Dan grades are used
  • –   A colour, passport-sized photograph is attached to the form
  • –   The form is signed by the candidate´s instructor
  • –   In the case of black belts, the katakana section is properly completed

The common administrative problems that will prevent a candidate from grading are: A current colour photograph is not attached. Your Sensei´s signature is missing. The Katakana section has not been completed (Dan forms only). Your EGKA membership has lapsed.

If your form is not completed properly, or your EGKA membership has lapsed … you will not be allowed to grade.

Remember you will also need to bring your EGKA membership booklet and slip to prove your membership is up to date. Check it now, so you have time to renew your membership if you need to.

We will accept emailed copies of application forms on or before the 1st December 2011, provided the original and properly completed forms are handed to the Secretary no later than the close of the Saturday training session. As grading candidate lists have to be drawn up over Saturday night, we will not accept forms being handed in on Sunday morning. No exceptions will be made.

You can get a better understanding of the actual grading process, and what the Grading Panel will be looking for by reading Your Grading - What to expect on the day.

Grading Fees

In future we will require all candidates to present to the grading registration desk to pay for their grading in the Sunday lunch break on the day of the grading. The grading fees have to be accounted for separately from the weekend´s training fees, and to simplify matters we will not accept payments to cover both the training and the grading fees at the start of the weekend.

Grading Fees Brown Belts Adult Black belts Junior Black Belts
  1st Kyu: £40 Shodan: £120 Shodan: £100
  2nd Kyu: £40 Nidan: £150 Nidan: £120
  3rd Kyu: £40 Sandan: £200

Please bring the exact amount if you intend to pay by cash. Cheque should be made payable to the "EGKA".

Grading fees will not be refunded if a student does not pass. That student will be given a 50% reduction in the grading fee when they retest at either of the next two grading sessions. The Grading Committee has adopted this policy to deter a growing trend for students to chance their luck by presenting too early for grading without gaining the necessary experience.

EGKA Membership

Every person applying to grade must ensure their EGKA membership is up to date AND will remain in force over the grading weekend.

Any grading candidate whose EGKA membership has lapsed at the time of applying will automatically be prohibited from grading this time around. So check your EGKA membership is up to date before sending in your form.

We appreciate that there will always be some candidates where their EGKA membership renewal date will fall between the time they make their grading application and the grading date. Please advise us if this is the case. We suggest you make an early application to renew your EGKA membership and liaise with us if there is a delay in the renewal process. Under these circumstances, a delay would not affect your right to participate in the grading.

If you apply to grade, the Grading Panel will assume you have taken personal responsibility to ensure your EGKA Membership is up to date and current on the grading day itself. You will be required to present your EGKA Membership Booklet and Membership Slip as part of the grading registration process.
